Things to do on Fire Island You’re Guaranteed to Love

Things to do in Long Island, Fire Island Beach

Fire Island is a beautifully unique destination that I feel fortunate to be within close proximity to. With over 32 miles of white sand beaches, very few cars, a national forest and friendly communities the island is a fantastic place to visit. Its diverse landscape is as fascinating as it is breathtaking and the island offers a truly wonderful experience for visitors. Amongst some of my favorite things to do on Fire Island include soaking up the sun on the picturesque white sand beaches, exploring the natural beauty of the sunken forest, and indulging in Fire Islands vibrant bars and restaurants.

Fire Island is as much a great place to get away from it all and enjoy some down time as it is a vibrate and energetic place. It’s true there really is something for everyone. If you’re looking for an exciting adventure, a relaxing beach day, or something in between, Fire Island ticks all the boxes! Here are some of my favorite things to do on Fire Island.

1. Soak up the sun on one of Fire Islands sunny beaches

One of my favorite things to do on Fire Island is to soak up the sun on the pristine sand beaches. If you prefer a quieter and less busy beach, then Kismet Beach is a great option. It boasts beautiful scenery and tends to be less congested than some of the more lively communities. However, it still offers amenities and beach side bars and restaurants – I highly recommend trying the lobster rolls at Surfs Out! This beach can be easily accessed by a short ferry journey or by car via the Robert Moses State Park, making it very convenient, especially if you have a lot of beach gear.

If you’re in the mood for a beach party, then Ocean Bay Park Beach is the place to be. Cherry Grove is a clothing-optional beach that offers a unique experience and is known for its LGBT-friendly atmosphere. Ocean Beach is perfect for those who enjoy shopping, bars and restaurants within close proximity, whereas Smith Point Beach is the go-to if you’re looking to surf.

2. Paddle board or kayak around the beautiful shores of Fire Island

If you’re looking for more adventurous activities, there is no shortage of ways to stay active on Fire Island! Paddle boarding around the shores is a fun and unique way to explore the island, perfect for those who enjoy water sports. It allows you to experience Fire Island from a different perspective and see areas that may not be easily accessible on foot. There are a few places where you can hire equipment or bring your own gear and drive to Robert Moses State Parkway.

Additionally, there is a guided canoe tour around the Fire Island salt marshes east of Watch Hill. Led by a local ranger, this tour is free of charge, and while it operates on a first-come, first-serve basis, it rarely reaches capacity so you shouldn’t be disappointed. Reservations can be made at the visitors center near Watch Hill.

3. Try your hand at surfing in the clear waters of Fire Island’s beaches

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m no surfer, but every now and then, I enjoy trying it out. Luckily, there are plenty of locals on Fire Island waiting to provide lessons at some of the best surf spots such as Atlantique, Point O’ Woods, and Smith Point. Alternatively, if you’re looking to watch surfing from the beach or ride faster waves, Ocean Beach jetties are the place to be. And when you’re ready for a break, there are plenty of bars to grab a cold drink.

4. Riding a bike through Fire Island is truly one of my favorite things to do on Fire Island

Hire a bike and take a journey across the island to explore more than you can on foot. Follow the bike trails to Fire Island lighthouse, Kismet and Fair Harbor. Take a scenic ride through the sunken forest, a truly unique destination and one of the last marine forests on the east coast.

Several places near the bike trails offer bike rentals and provide information about the best places to go. While cycling, just be sure to observe the pedestrian-only towns and boardwalks throughout the island.

5. Take a cruise around the island for unforgettable day trip

Hiring a sports yacht is an unforgettable way to explore the stunning coastline of Fire Island in style. There are several places where you can charter a yacht for a half-day or full-day trip on a private vessel to take in sights that you might otherwise miss. Enjoy the fresh sea breeze and cruise across The Great South Bay, along Fire Island ports and beaches, and even travel to Sag Harbor and The Hamptons on Long Island.

6. Explore hidden coves, trails, lagoons, dunes, lakes and forests scattered throughout the area

Explore the diverse landscape of Fire Island on foot, bike, or water. Discover coves, trails, lagoons, dunes, lakes, and forests – there is something for everyone. You can go solo or join guided tours with local rangers. Tour the salt lakes, stroll across boardwalks, take a nature trail through the winding forests, and keep an eye out for local wildlife! The ancient sunken forest is a great place to stay out of the sun on hot days.

Another great thing about Fire Island is that you cannot get lost since most pathways run length ways across the narrow island. Additionally, Fire Island has several lighthouses that visitors can explore, each with a unique history and stunning views that you won’t find anywhere else.

7. Indulge your inner taste-buds with some delicious seafood dishes from local restaurants

It comes as no surprise that Fire Island is home to many great places to find fantastic seafood dishes. The largest concentration of restaurants can be found in the village of Ocean Beach, known as the unofficial capital of Fire Island. It’s one of the largest communities on the island and also a great place for shopping and nightlife.

8. Discover hidden gems and local boutiques

Ocean Beach is the perfect destination for shopping and discovering local stores, markets, and boutiques. It offers everything you need from beach gear to groceries and local souvenirs. However, there are also hidden shopping gems throughout the various local communities on Fire Island.

9. Stargazing at night as a unique thing to do on Fire Island

It’s time to unplug from all digital devices and take in the breathtaking views of the stars above Fire Island. The dark night skies across the island offer the perfect opportunity to experience breathtaking views of thousands of twinkling stars above you. You’ll feel at peace with nature as you observe our celestial neighbors during the warm nights on Fire Island.

10. Take to time relax and unwind in a spa

After a long day in the sun, taking time to relax and unwind at a local spa is the perfect way to wind down. A spa session is a great opportunity to give your skin and body some much-needed TLC and wellness during your time on Fire Island. Fire Island has several spas that offer a variety of treatments, such as massages, facials, body wraps, and more. Treat yourself to a hot stone massage or a reflexology session to relieve stress and tension in your body. Or try a rejuvenating facial to refresh your skin after a day in the sun.

The island’s spas also offer customized treatments based on your individual needs and preferences. In addition to the traditional spa treatments, some spas on Fire Island offer unique services like guided meditation, yoga, and sound healing. These services are perfect for those looking to deepen their relaxation and spiritual experience.
